Why should you use period underwear?

Of course, there are plenty of reasons, but the main ones being: to save nature and consume less! On average, a woman uses In total 350 packages of liners or 9,600 tampons in her lifetime. Different chemicals and a lot of plastic is used in the production of tampons which would take up to 500 years of decomposition time in nature. Liners contain about 90% plastic that will not be decomposed in nature for many generations. Although there is no scientific evidence on the effects of tampons and TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome), or the products released chemicals on our body, it is nevertheless often associated with the usage of tampons. In comparison, it might be sufficient to have 2 to 5 pieces of period underwear that is reusable, eventually depending on the menstrual flow, the absorbency of the different underwear models, and the personal preference on the product type.

Is absorbent underwear more expensive than tampons and liners?

On average, an Estonian woman spends 15 euros a month on tampons and liners, totalling 180 euros a year. One piece of period underwear can last for years with proper care. On average, you need 3 to 5 pairs, which totals 135-225 euros. In just two years, the savings are between 135 and 225 euros, not to mention the significantly less waste produced that is not decomposable in nature. The investment in Rocking Undies underwear pays off already during the first year.

Why is bamboo fabric good?

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. The bamboo plant grows to full height  in a few months and matures in a few years, but there are also species that reach their strength and maturity in 60-90 days. In the fabric industry, bamboo is considered a very environmentally friendly raw material because it grows quickly and naturally, without pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, and requires little water. Bamboo fabric is soft, smooth and slow to wrinkle. Bamboo fabric helps to keep the skin dry, absorbs moisture very well (about 3 times better than cotton) and helps to regulate body temperature (cooling effect with heat in summer and warming during cold winter). Textiles made of bamboo have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, do not irritate the skin or cause allergies, are 100% biodegradable.

How to take care?

After use, rinse or wash under running water, do not leave to soak. After rinsing, wash the underwear together with other dark clothes in the washing machine. Do not use a program with higher than 40 degrees water temperature. Do not use bleach or softener. After washing, hang for natural drying, do not use the tumble dryer. The underwear does not need ironing. Proper care ensures longer lifetime! As the underwear is made of several layers, the drying period might be longer than usual.

However, if the underwear has been left to soak or without washing for too long, vinegar can be used by adding it into the washing machine instead of laundry detergent (1:5). You can also add a few drops of essential oil of your choice, which gives a pleasant smell to the laundry.

How many pieces of underwear do I need?

It all depends on your regular menstrual flow and whether you also use a menstrual cup, tampons, liners or some other hygiene products. If you only use the period underwear, you must also take into account the longer drying time than with regular underwear. Depending on the menstrual flow and exchange frequency, you may need a few additional pieces.

During period: 3-7 sets dependant on the menstrual flow and preferred type of underwear.

Bladder incontinence: Add a few more sets to the previous amount

Daily usage or during light period: (1 for day-time + 1 for night-time) x days until the next laundry = perfect amount
